Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre is staying open late from April-June 2022, hosting a series of mini festivals as part of their new Casula Up Late program.
The event will be exhibiting art, performances, markets and workshops, accompanied by performances from local DJs and musicians. This event is sure to give Western Sydney something to talk about!
The sequence of events at Casula Up Late are as follows:
Night Makers Market
When: From 5:30pm, Saturday 23rd April
What is it: The Australian Design Centre is curating the Night Makers Market to be filled with the finest and unique hand-made objects across 10 different stalls. The markets will allow the attendee to get to know the artist and even have the opportunity to participate in a workshop crafting felt jewellery pieces.
What musicians are playing: Milkfish and Sol will keep audiences entertained as they craft the night away .
When: From 5:30pm, Friday 6th May
What is it: Italian culture will be celebrated with a film screening of L’intervallo (The Interval) (2012) supported by the Institute of Italian Culture Sydney. There will also be an art workshop to embrace your inner artist and learn how the Italian masters did it!
What musicians are playing: Before the film, Joey Fimmano and Sounds of Seduction DJs will kickstart the Italian atmosphere. Doesn’t it sound fantastico?!
Galleries After Dark – Behind the Blake Prize
When: From 5:30pm, Saturday 7th May
What is it: This is a night to be prepared to think outside of the box. Filled with creativity, expression and questioning, the audience will engage with an exhibition of sound art, poetry and dance exploring the themes behind The Blake Prize. There is also an opportunity to engage in an art or wine tasting workshop.
What performers will be there: Billy Koehavong will lead a not to be missed musical and dance performance.
Galleries After Dark – Being Different
When: From 5:30pm, Saturday 14th May
What is it: This night will bring the perspective of living with a disability to audiences through the world of art and performance. Attendees will be able to interact with a solo exhibition VR experience titled ‘Being Different’ produced by Deena Keenahan, as she speaks about being born with achondroplasia dwarfism. Art and mask making workshops will also be held.
What performers will be there: Riana Head-Toussaint a multidisciplinary artist with disability will perform, proving that her use of a wheelchair will not stop talents.
When: From 5:30pm, Friday 3rd June
What is it: Italian culture will be explored with a film screening of Balancing Act (2012) supported by the Institute of Italian Culture Sydney. There will also be an art workshop to embrace your inner artist and learn how the Italian masters did it!
What musicians are playing: Before the film, Clarissa Spata and Sounds of Seduction DJs will dive right into creating an incredible Italian evening.
Galleries After Dark – Done on the Wall
When: From 5:30pm, Saturday 4th June
What is it: The work of Ken Done and his family will be celebrated, coinciding with the Done exhibition at the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre. The exhibition will acknowledge the way the vibrancy of Done’s creations have shaped and influenced Australian artworks. It will be a night of discussion about the nostalgia of Done’s works and how it impacted people in the room.
What performers will be there: Physical theatre company Legs on the Wall will be performing TRESTLE, a technical composition sure to amaze audiences.
Most of these events are free of charge, however there may be parts of the night that will require a cost, such as dinner at the Centre’s Bellbird Bar.
