Sydney’s West has recently opened activateCentral – Australia’s largest culturally responsive sensory and therapy-informed recreational facility in the heart of Milperra. At this centre, you can visit and play no matter your age or ability.
Aiming to provide a safe space for people of all ages, disabilities, neurotypes and backgrounds – the centre allows for all-inclusive play, therapies, and education. Centres like this are a pivotal step in creating accessibility for fun and recovery. It is accessible for both kids and adults to play and engage their motor and social skills.
Some of the many activities and equipment the centre has on offer include a sensory activity room that encourages self-regulation through interactive exploration, slides that are tailored to promote coordination, and climbing walls to support problem-solving and sensorimotor functioning.

Managed by a professional psychological and allied health service called pyschCentral, the centre ensures the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse communities (CALD) are being accommodated. Allied Health Manager, Sakina Fattouh shares that the centre hopes to tackle stigmas around people with disabilities and similar support services.
“Having an open discussion about these places and their benefits is a crucial element. This removes the stigma that places like this are ‘special’ and shifts them to a perspective of them being the new norm,” says Fattouh.
The centre being so close to our very own Western Sydney University campuses provides opportunities for students who wish to further their studies and experience in the care and support sector. Sakina tells W’SUP News that students have an opportunity to participate in and assist with day-to-day tasks and responsibilities.
“They will partake in supervision sessions with a senior clinician, providing them with the opportunity to debrief, present ideas and generate ideas for therapy,” she adds.
