Umbrellageddon

Sydney’s intense rain over the last few days has left some unsuspecting victims high and not so dry. No it’s not your favourite pair of extra absorbent winter socks that you mistakenly wore out into the rainstorm. It’s actually the friendly umbrella that has been left behind on the battlefield of the war between human and Mother Nature.

Across Sydney hundreds of innocent umbrellas have been abandoned and left in overflowing rubbish bins, gutters and parks by their owners. Each umbrella has been left mangled, contorted and unappreciated.

The event has been dubbed ‘umbrellageddon’ by social media and has picked up steam as people post images of the event via Twitter and Facebook. The occurrence began when hundreds if not thousands of Sydney siders gave up hope that the thin-bodied canopy could protect them anymore from the mighty cold rains.

A City of Sydney spokesperson said that their maintenance teams have been working hard to clean up the mess the storm has left. They further explained the situation by saying that they had been cleaning up “dozens of broken umbrellas that did not survive the extremely strong winds.” Though they could not confirm roughly how many.

Ticker retailer Moshtix shone light on the forgotten umbrella by posting a competition on their Facebook page satirically calling it the ‘Sydney’s Pop-Up Umbrella Street Art Exhibition’. The contest invites people to send in their best photos of rejected umbrellas.
