How TikTok works and why you should use it

TikTok accelerates businesses discovering musicians, the music industry creating genuine fans. Driving music discovery there are many features such as filtering views, make another cover from another song, create duet videos, control privacy and filter different video settings.

TikTok is not all about dances and lip syncs. It’s not even about being funny. It’s about being yourself and being truly authentic. Life is busy and it takes time to build engagement. Your fans are already following you on other platforms. Or you might think TikTok is only for pop music or only for kids. Yet Jimmy Barnes, Kylie Minogue, Elton John and ABBA are all on TikTok. So why start a TikTok account?

Finding new fans who might connect to your songs serves the musician and the listener. They choose if they want more of that content and the musician tailors music around their audience. All different genres are embraced on the platform.

Start using Tiktok by keeping your bio simple and fun. Try to connect with your audience. Choose a clear and recognisable profile pic to stand out and show who you really are.

Second step is to explore what is interesting to you. Fashion, travel, food and all the activities you have done before in your life you can get the latest news about. There are experts, influencers, digital creators, directors, entrepreneurs and everyday people that speak on the platform. Many videos are fact based, personal testimonies or creative works that give a message that impacts the audience psychology. Use what you view to create insights into what your views and opinions are on certain topics.

You are able to curate your brand and showcase the story of your business. Finding new fans by performing activities that are unique and ambitious to you. Knowing what time of day you perform, what room do you use, and blending different passions together are powerful ways to attract a certain audience. Be thoughtful and considerate. Produce quality content not quantity.

To be viral of TikTok or any social media platform you must tell a story. You must ask the question “what do people want to know about me?” Going viral and engaging with audiences should be own goal. Having 100 people engaging (eg. liking) is better than 1000 people viewing.

Experiment and try out different ideas. Learn new formats, skills and make it intimate and personal. Try to post 2-3 times a week. Turn on different functions such as having a video you can use side by side (duet), collaborate with other users (stitch) and save videos to interact with your audience. Don’t stress if you don’t post anything. It’s about quality over quantity. Use the hashtags as they are effective in reaching new fans. Create engaging content and speak to the networks. Have fun!
