Western’s Student Union is almost here!

by | Jul 24, 2025 | Campus News

W’SUP News has been closely following news regarding Western Sydney University’s student union that is set to be established in the upcoming months with operations to begin early 2026. We recently asked SRC President Laine Fox for union updates.

Laine’s Statement:

“The long-anticipated Western Sydney University Student Union (WSUSU) is closer than ever to becoming a reality, with its official registration now on the horizon. In a landmark moment for student representation at Western Sydney University, the University’s Board of Trustees voted on Wednesday, 4 June 2025 to formally approve the WSUSU Constitution.

This pivotal decision gives the green light for the next phase — registering the union as a legal entity. With the University’s appointed board members now in place, preparations are moving full steam ahead toward building a student-led body that will champion the voices and interests of Western students.

Elections for the inaugural WSUSU Student Board and Student Representative Committee will take place in the coming months. These elections will mark the first-time students have the opportunity to vote for their peers to lead the new union — a milestone in the evolution of student democracy at Western.

WSUSU is set to begin operations in early 2026 and is expected to take over several key functions, currently under negotiation. Ideally, this transition will include clubs and societies, student events, and major elements of the student community team. The aim is to create a student-run union that drives engagement, builds a stronger campus culture, and ensures students are at the heart of decision-making.

While much has been achieved, there’s still work ahead. The current Student Representative Council is working hard to bring WSUSU to life, laying the groundwork for a vibrant and independent student union. Throughout next semester, a series of forums, seminars, and information sessions — both online and in-person — will be held to update students, answer questions, and invite participation.

Stay tuned —This is your union, and it’s almost here.”

What Does This Mean?

From our earlier article on the unionisation of the student body, it seems that we’ve come a long way. The SRC has secured approval from the University’s Board of Trustees for the union to proceed.

The University’s Student Representation and Participation webpage is receiving ongoing updates as information is released, providing detailed explanations about the union’s structure and functions.

The SRC will hold an open forum at Parramatta South Campus, building EA, on the 6th of August at 4:00 PM well as Penrith (Kingswood) Campus, Building P, on August 21st, at 11:00 AM. Students are encouraged to attend and ask further questions on the union.
