Before the sun begins to rise,
a nurse is already by someone’s side.
Not just asking what hurts today;
But wondering what words cannot say.
They carry no spotlight, applause, nor fame;
Just quiet commitment to every name.
With tired eyes and steady hands,
They show up where compassion stands.
They learn things not always spoken –
The nervous smile, the spirit broken,
The shaky voice, the change in tone,
The moments someone feels alone.
They notice the details others miss—
A fading colour, a restless night,
The subtle signs something is wrong,
A small concern that could change a life.
They measure numbers, follow the signs,
Yet it is more than charts and lines.
It’s the conversation beside the bed,
The comforting words that need to be said.
They celebrate the moments that seem so small—
A patient walking after a fall
A first deep breath, a hopeful smile,
Progress after a difficult while.
They stand at the beginning and end of life,
Through moments of joy and moments of strife.
They welcome new beginnings with gentle care
And hold onto hope when life feels unfair.
The world may celebrate the names it knows,
The discoveries and the stories it shows.
But behind many recoveries, unseen and true,
There was a nurse who simply knew what to do.
Nursing is knowledge, courage and skill,
But it is also the heart and the will,
to see the person behind the illness they face
and remind them they matter in every place.
Behind every medication, every wound dressed, every hand held tight
Is a person choosing to bring comfort and light.
So here’s to the nurses still learning, still growing, still finding their way.
The ones who give kindness even on the most demanding day.
When their shift ends,
The impact doesn’t end there,
Because a nurse’s greatest gift
Is the feeling someone truly cares.
